A CHRISTMAS CAROL

ABOUT THE SHOW

Ebeneezer Scrooge is mean, no doubt about that. But, as Christmas approaches he’s going to get the fright of his life. Three mysterious Christmas visitors make him see that there is more to life than counting his pennies. What follows is an important tale of friendship, compassion and humanity.

This Christmas, we’ll recreate the show with a distinctly Knowsley feel. The result will be a slightly bonkers, fast and furious retelling of the original text with a host of musical instruments, some familiar local references and a sprinkling of pantomime fun.

THE TEAM

Shakespeare North Playhouse will open its doors in Summer 2022 bringing people together to participate in a unique programme of performance, activities and conversations, inspired by Shakespeare and relevant to all of us. At its heart is a traditional 470 seat timber framed Shakespearean theatre that will host a mix of vibrant new performances. Inspired by Prescot’s historic connections to William Shakespeare and a real love of storytelling, Shakespeare North Playhouse will play a key role in the ongoing regeneration of Knowsley; a place full of brilliant people with a story to tell.

ROLES:

JOSIAH SPECKLEDYKE (ANY GENDER, 30–50 YEARS)

A nervous Butler who takes on the role of Ebenezer Scrooge throughout and embodies a lot of Scrooge’s cynical qualities. Josiah is a strict rule-follower who gets easily frustrated. Cautious and disapproving of the fun had by the others.  Seeking an exceptional comedy actor-musician with extensive multi-role and physical comedy experience. Audience participation runs throughout the piece so the actor must be confident in this level of interaction as well as have a confident lead singing vocal. We are open to all instruments for this role, but not keys/guitar only. We are committed to diverse, inclusive casting. For every role please submit performers without regard to disability, age, sexual orientation or gender identity.

LIZA GRUBB (FEMALE, NON-BINARY, 30–50 YEARS)

An outspoken and upfront cook who is the chief housekeeper. Liza throws themselves into telling us the story with excitement and hope for the future, playing many comedic characters including the Ghost of Christmas Past and almost the entire Cratchit family. POD (ANY GENDER, 18–30 YEARS)

An endearing and silly dogsbody who takes care of the odd jobs around the house. Often the brunt of the jokes and is excited about the prospect of there being ghosts in the story! Pod likes to rile up Speckledyke and takes great pleasure in irritating him. Pod is very close with Mrs Grubb the cook and Clara who work together to create the story. Pod plays many characters including Jacob Marley, Bob Cratchit and Tiny Tim. CLARA WINKS (FEMALE, NON-BINARY, 18–30 YEARS)

A giggly and energetic chambermaid who plays many other characters in the story including Ghost of Christmas Present, Bella and Mrs. Cratchit. Clara is super enthusiastic to tell the story and has lots of great ideas which don’t always work out. She follows the chief housekeeper Grubb's lead on the storytelling elements, but often takes things too literally and makes mistakes much to Speckledyke's annoyance.
